The Victorians, and those who lived hundreds of years before them, believed that every growing thing had a specific message -- a language, as it were. Eventually this "Language of Flowers" became an easy way to pass on a secret message, either through a bouquet (often called a "tussie-mussie") or a motif painted, pasted or stitched onto a gift or current project. This special way of communicating was published in many places, and became not only a way to communicate with the ones you loved, but a way to declare principles and beliefs.
