COOL SLEEPING...THE OLD-TIME WAY
How did our ancestors do it? With a "summer spread," an unlined (or lightly lined) quilt, often simply pieced and embroidered. (Redwork was a favorite technique.) Sometimes the quilt top was backed with a sheet, the edges turned and whipstitched together. Sometimes the top was left unbacked, and the raw seams turned over and handstitched, french seam-style. White, cool muslin was the main ingredient in these refreshing pieces.

FIVE FUN TEXTILE THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU’RE SICK:
  1. Check your bedquilt CLOSE-up. Admire the stitches. (Or wince.) Add some beads, or a charm or two.
  2. Knit a scarf for a kiddo…straight garter stitch (knit, knit, ad infinitum), 36-42 stitches, so you don’t have to think.
  3. Try not to sneeze in a hankie! Admire it, instead, for a future Hanky Panky…
  4. Watch a movie. Critique the clothes and the quilts. Are they ‘right’ for the period?
  5. And don’t forget all those craft/quilting/home dec shows. Watch ‘em. Watch ‘em all. No guilt trip, either – you’re SICK!
